Trench coat 🧥
Created as early as the 19th century for the leisure time of the English aristocracy, * it became popular in the trenches of the First World War: Thomas Burberry appreciated the technical qualities, which guarantee notable performance, and transformed it into an iconic, genderless coat.
After an apprenticeship as a designer, at just 21 years old he opened a shop in Basingstoke, focusing precisely on performance fabrics for rainwear, ga a waterproof gabardine, which turned out to be lighter than the Macintosh (in vogue at the time).
It is thanks to technology, a weave specifically designed to repel water, waxing the cotton thread during the same process, that the first Burberry raincoat was born.
The first Burberry men’s trench coat (as we know it today) arrived only a few years later, in 1912: Burberry became the official supplier of the British army and among the garments created there was also the iconic double-breasted outerwear.
The clean line of the raincoat is enriched with functional details to allow soldiers to carry military equipment
and weapons and to indicate the different ranks.
The collar is a true work of design: a strap of a few centimeters is inserted which allows greater protection from the elements, all rigorously hand-sewn to obtain a perfect contour.
A design masterpiece that is still appreciated and worn today when the mid-season begins to be felt with wind, rain and fog.
