Before becoming the designer we all know today, his real name was initially Ralph Lifshitz.
At the age of 16, Ralph's brother Jerry changed their last name to Lauren and because the designer was constantly teased about his name at school he changed his last name to Lauren too.
It may seem strange to you but Ralph Lauren began his career as a tie designer.
After working for Brooks Brothers as a salesman, he branched out and started his own business, going from store to store selling his ties

Some of these ties were made from old rags. Ralph Lauren presented it as "wide and unusual", in this way it stood out on the market and slowly achieved success.
